Jonathan Edwin Opiyo

(Sept 1939 – July, 20th 2018)

It is with humble acceptance of God’s will that we announce the passing on of Mr. Jonathan Edwin Opiyo, Assistant Commissioner of Prisons (Retired) on Friday, July 20, 2018 at Coptic Hospital Nairobi after a long illness. He hailed from Keyo Nyadundo, Nyakach Kadiang’a in Kisumu County. A longtime resident and farmer of Wamuini in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County.

Son of the late Mzee James Opiyo, the late Mama Migot Tindi Akech and Step Son of the late Mama Susanna Opiyo and Mama Caren Opiyo. Husband of Mrs. Dorcas Opiyo. Father of Daniel Opiyo (Associate Motors Group), Juddy Opiyo Ruto, GMS-K (formerly UN -FAO Somalia), Phoebe Opiyo (Kairos Praise Ministry), James Opiyo (Miracle Life Assembly), Nelly Opiyo (Lumine Kenya) and Diana Opiyo (Agricultural and Food Authority).

Son-in-law of the late Mzee Jeremiah Orut and the late Mama Zilpah Orut of Sakwa Kopolo, Wayendhe. Brother of the late Leah, the late Nickodemus Oluodhi, William Oguma Opiyo, (Ogaye mar Kadianga) the late Grace Adhiambo, Pamella, the late Thomas Kerre, Eunice, Keneddy, Zachariah and Beatrice.

Uncle of the late Tom Oper, Peter Onyango, Peres Akello (Russia Hospital), Tabitha Ochieng, Ken Opiyo Kisumu County, Judith Busera, Lydia Opiyo (Principal Kanyamedha Secondary School), James Opiyo (FAO Kenya) and Anson Owuor. Uncle of Hon. Aduma Owuor, MP Nyakach, Bob Koga, Ruth Koga, Millicent Akinyi, Peter Odiembo, Eric Obiero, Nashon Obiero Kadus and many others.

Brother-in-law of Mrs Alice Ojuodhi, Tabitha Opiyo, the late Herine, Alice Oder, Lydia Odundo and others. Father-in- law of Sophie Opiyo, Margaret Nafula, Naomi Orut and Hon. Philip Rotino. He leaves behind 15 Grandchildren including Nick (India), Sharon (Prime Bank), Brenda (Moi University), Eddie Seymour (UoN), Purpose Rotino, Angel, Innocent, Alvin, Justin, Israel, Christian, Blessing, Praise George and 2 great grandchildren: Natasha and Arthur.Mzee was a loving Godfather to the Opondo Oduol’s children and the Ouya Obiero’s (Tembea).

Friends and family are meeting at Nairobi Baptist Church, Ngong road from 5:30pm every day.

There will be a fundraiser at All Saints Cathedral on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at 5.30pm to offset medical expenses.

The cortege leaves Coptic Hospital Nairobi on Wednesday, August 8, 2018 for an overnight stay in Kitale and a memorial service on Thursday, August 9, 2018.

It will proceed to Nyakach Kadianga, Keyo Nyadundo on Friday, August 10, 2018 for an overnight stay.

Burial will be on Saturday, August 11, 2018.
