Rest in peace my friend, brother and class mate fro. Sac. State. Your love for kenya and ever thing kenya is an understatement especially kenya tea. (The best tea) as he would say. You were a great friend and classmate.

I knew Joseph as Chuma. We studied at California State University Sacramento together and work for Caltrans together as colleagues. I will miss you my friend. I always enjoyed our lunches together at the Silver Skillet. He was a good Construction Engineer that over saw the building of many Northern California projects.

To my friend Chuma. From the first time we met and worked together we were friends. We shared many conversations on how similar we are. You being Kalenjin and me being Wailaki. Although we were from different continents we both had a passion to help our family and tribes. When we greeted each other it was with smiles a hug and the words “Wailaki!” —- “Kalejin!” . The last words we spoke were always … “until we meet again”.
Until we meet again Kalejin. Your Wailaki brother Dereck

Chuma was my friend whom I had the pleasure of calling my “Brother”. I’m saddened to hear of your passing. We met while working at CALTRANS. You were a gentle soul and a dedicated Engineer. I will always cherish the times that we hung out for lunch. I will always remember the great conversations that we had about design and construction projects. I will miss you. Rest In Peace!

The news came as a shock to me, as I had just run into Chuma at the neighborhood grocery store recently, and we had a nice conversation. I knew Chuma since my days at Sac State and then we worked together off and on for almost 20+ years and I had lot of nice conversations with him over the years. I will miss you and will miss the random conversation we would have whenever we ran into each other.
May his soul rest in peace.

Joseph Chuma, my friend, colleague, study partner…the one who introduced me to “ugali” while we were studying for mid-terms, rest in peace! I will miss your laughter and the lively debates often held when we meet at our annual construction training; I will miss your long pronunciation of my last name “Koo ‘ka.” Your voice may be silent but you are not forgotten. Rest in Peace!

I’m very much saddened to hear the passing of my good friend Chuma who I had the honor to know in school and work with at Caltrans. As he would always yell my name, SADEEQ! with a huge smile on his face. I was always happy to see him as well. I’m grateful that I got to see you before the lockdown walking around the capitol. I want your family in Kenya to know that Chuma was loved by everyone who came in touch with him here in the US. God bless you my friend and always keep that smile!!! May you rest in peace…!

I have known Chuma since early nineties when we went to Sac State and then we worked together on and off for 20 plus years. I will miss your smile and easy ways and miss our nice chats anytime we ran into each other. it was always very nice to talk to you.
May his soul rest in peace.
