It is with great sadness and deep sorrow that The Huma Family announces the passing of Joseph Odero Mainya Huma of East Kanyamamba on April 18.2021.

Son of late Mzee Mathayo Huma Kaseu and late Mama Keturah Ogal Huma of the Waregi Clan of Rusinga Island. He was preceded in death by siblings Sarah Akomo Huma, Zipporah Auma Ouma, Dinasio Kaoga Hurna, Philip Dola Huma, Perpetua Akomo, Dr Phares Onyango Hurna, Opiyo and Odongo Huma, Sister-in-law Rose Ng’ahi Huma, First wife, Beverly Jean Huma, Many nieces and nephews.

Husband of loving and devoted wife Doris Atieno Huma. Father of Kaseu Otieno Huma, Miregi Okinyi Huma, Ramogi Dola Huma, Mathayo Ogal Huma, Lynn Adhrambo Huma, and Mathayo Onyango Huma. Uncle to Kaoga Achola Huma, Ziporah Auma Huma, and Margaret Obanda Ogal Huma Grandfather of Christina Marie Wise, Dr Marissa Yvonne Huma, Mikan Omar Huma, Isaiah Marciano Huma„ Sarah Elise Huma, Oman Garcia Huma, and Shay Garcia Huma.

Father-in-law of Geetha Huma, Nogah Garcia Huma, Addison Noel Huma and Lynn-Mutheu Huma. Grandfather-in-law of Ryan Thomas Wise. Step-son of Jemima Ajwang Huma. Brother of Elizabeth Achieng Huma-Ratemo, Samson Odhiambo Huma, Eugene Achienga Hurna and Nancy Adhiambo Jackson. Brother in-law of Jane Kaoga, Rose Huma, Stella Huma, Emma Huma andRose Achienga.

Son-in-law of Mzee Michael Ojoo Opata and Mama Margaret Ojoo Opata of Bondo district North Sakwa, Kapiyo. Brother-in-law of Philip Rodi, Martin Ojoo, George, Richard, arid David Opata, Paul Otieno, Okoth MakOduol, Lilian Otieno, Claris Okoth, Liz Ojoo, Mercy and Faith Opata, and many others. Uncle to Victor Otieno, Samson MakOduol, Glen Rodi, Keith Ojoo, and many others.

Uncle of John Ochieng Ouma, George Otieno Huma, Erick Ochola Huma, David Omondi Ouma, Eunice Aueno Odipo, Keith Oketch Huma, Okang’a Huma, Kaseu Ouma, Kitura Carrie Huma, Allan Ogal, Maureen Awuor Kaoga, Simon Okoth Huma, Tabia Awuor Huma, Kaseu Huma, Laban Okong’o Huma, Dafros Jackson, Marissa Akinyi, Kitura Ogal Huma ,Tabia Huma, Gillam Jackson, Moses Ouma Kaoga, Martha Achieng’a, Mares Onyango Huma, Rose Huma, Winnie Akinyi Huma, Samson Huma, EJrzabeth Huma, Vivian Jackson, George Otieno, Seth Otieno, and many others.

Joseph emigrated from Rusinga Island to the United States in 1961 to attend high school in Alaska. He went on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees from California State University, Los Angeles. He taught as a professor at that university and at California State University, San Bernardino. His career with the State of California began teaching and ended with a long term as Supervisor of Correctional Education Programs. He retired In 2002. In retirement, he returned to Kenya. In East Kanyamamba, he founded the Dr. Phares Onyango Huma Memorial Orphanage which later became the Kogal Academy Day School. He facilitated local water and electricity projects in collaboration with East Kanyamamba villagers, Engineers Without Borders, the County of Migori, and Kenya Power and Lighting Company. Both in and out of retirement, he had a passion for improving the lives of those around him, and took pride and joy in his children and grandchildren.

The funeral and burial will take place in West Kamagambo, East Kanyamamba Sub-Location, Nyang’inja Village, on May 9 2021.
