It is with deep regret and sense of personal loss that I learnt of the passing of you beloved Mother. My deepest condolences to you,the surviving children of my friend Nellie Akwiri Odhiambo. Although I have not had much time with your mother of late, I knew you as children when your father and mother worked in Ethiopia. Due to my long stay abroad, I have not seen much of you as you as you grew into adulthood but I kept in touch with your mother for many years in the past I want you to know that she was a friend and colleague. This is my tribute to her.
Nellie was graduating from Butere High School when I joined in 1961. In a class of 9 they were a special group of women: brilliant and confident. All of them went on to be very significant leaders in Kenya and internationall. Later we worked together when she was at the UN/ECA African Women’s Centre in Addis Abeba Ethiopia with Mary Tadesse who headed the Centre. Because of her diligence and her legal expertise and knowledge of women and development field, she was the one who put the legal stamp of approval and finalized all draft resolutions at Africa Regional Preparatory Conferences on women for which UNECA Women’s Centre was the secretariat. I remember working closely with her in 1979 in Lusaka on the Africa Regional Conference in preparation for the Copenhagen Conference of 1980; and in 1984 in Arusha at the Africa Regional Conference preparatory to the Nairobi 1985 World Conference to mark the end the end of the UN Decade for Women.and several other fora relating to the UN support for African women. Nelly was brilliant, humble, measured, charming and very wise. Of gentle disposition she believed in doing rather than showing off. I will miss her greatly. Rest well my friend. Nindi Nya Ngiya.
