Elizabeth Karungari Munga Githunguri was wife to ex Kiambaa MP Stanley Munga Githunguri.

Elizabeth died on November 17, 2020 after a long illness. She was a mother of his six children. Elizabeth once served as founding President Jomo Kenyatta’s secretary. That was back in the late 1960s to mid 1970s.

Githunguri was then the executive chairman of the National Bank of Kenya where both Mzee Kenyatta and Daniel arap Moi, then the Vice President, had bank accounts.

Githunguri married Elizabeth under customary laws in 1977-the year she stopped working as Kenyatta’s secretary.

Githunguri was elected as MP for Kiambaa in 2007. In 2013, he vied for the Kiambu senatorial seat but lost to the Kimani wa Matangi.

Elizabeth was daughter of Chief Francis Wanjihia Njuce and Marjory Nyakiago of Kamatu Village Nyeri District. She was daughter-in-law of the late Lilian Nyagaki Githunguri.

She was the adoring youngest sister of Silvia Nderitua (Mama Chuigu), the late John Kahumbu, the late Muthoni Muthiga, Mrs. Anna Ngima Mwai, Margaret Warigia Kangethe, the late Lily Nyathogora Oguda and Dr. Maina Wanjihia.

She was the most kind hearted and doting mother to Joanne Nyawira Wanjihia, Lilian Wanjiru Githunguri, Njeri Githunguri Mukabana, Lilian Joy Nyagaki Githunguri, Joseph Munga Githunguri and Francis Wanjihia Githunguri. Mother-in-law to Edward Mukabana and Jacqueline Wanjiru Mungai.

She was blessed with many nieces and nephews and was an amazing grandmother to many.

Family and friends are meeting at St. Francis Church in Karen for prayers on Saturday 21st November 2020 and Sunday 22nd November 2020 from 3pm to 4pm.

    I came to know of the sad news of mama’s passing only today.I send my sincere condolences to Mzee and entire family .May her soul rest in peace .

    I am shocked🙏🏿. RIP beloved. Elizabeth was my squad mate when the first African women inspectors joined the Kenya police force in 1965 🙏🏿♥️

    May God rest her soul in eternal peace I mourn Elizabeth a very kind hearted and caring person.She could never pass me by ,she would give me a lift in her car always to town on ngongbroad.
