James Njoroge Mugo, Taita Taveta University student, drowns

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the demise of James Njoroge Mugo, a second year student who was pursuing Bachelor of Purchase and Supplies Management.

We join together with his Family, Friends and entire TTU comrades to pray for his Soul.

Mugo died on Sunday afternoon while swimming in the institution’s newly opened swimming pool.

The death has caused anxiety in the institution as questions abound on what could have led to the death. The student was said to be a good swimmer who used to frequent the pool.

The student had swam for a few hours before he struck out to the deep end and drowned. Concerned by how long he had stayed underwater, other students jumped in and fished him out.

Desperate attempts by members of first aid club and medics from the varsity’s dispensary to resuscitate the unconscious swimmer were futile.

Police from Mwatate police station later took his body to the mortuary at Ikanga Mission Hospital where a postmortem is expected to be conducted to find out the cause of death.

Student leader Tobias Tangara described the death as a tragic and called for calm as the autopsy results were awaited.

“This death has hit us hard. It was so sudden and unexpected,” he said.

Confirming the incident, Mwatate OCPD Monica Kimani said investigations have been launched and several statements from students and varsity staff have been recorded by the police.

She added that the post-mortem would be done once the deceased’s next of kin arrived.

“We have already started a probe into what could have led to the tragedy. An autopsy will shed more light into this matter,” she said.

An eye witness said Mugo went missing for a few minutes, but before he could be rescued he had already been overpowered by the situation.
