Professor John Joseph Okumu

We regret to announce the death of Professor John Joseph Okumu on July 10th after a long battle with cancer. Prior to his death, he was Chairman of the Moi University Pension Fund, former Chairman, Maasai Mara University Council, former director, Rongo University College, founding director, East and Southern Africa Management Institute (ESAMI), Arusha and the founding Chairman of the Department of Political Science, University of Nairobi.

Son of the late Dalmas Odero and Herenia Obimbo of Madungu sublocation, Uholo Constituency. Husband of Laura Okumu of U.S.A, Diana Opondo of East Songhor, Tamu location. Father of Osir Rolle and Franklin Wasonga Okumu both of the U.S. Father in-law of Raymond Rolle and Nicole Okumu, and grandfather to Mwai, Karugu Kinywa, Niko John Okumu and Enzo Okumu. Brother of the late Cornel Okech, Zachary Okong’o, Paul Oloo, Romanus Oluoch, Hellen Achieng and Leonida Misiko. Brother in-law of Mary Oloo, Catherine Oluoch, the late Bernadette Okech, Aida Okong’o and the Oyiekes of Kanyada, Homa Bay. Uncle of the Okechs, the Okongos, the Oluochs, the Oloos the Misikos, the Okumbes and the Opondos.

The cortege will leave Avenue Hospital Mortuary, Kisumu on Thursday 25th July at 11am for a Requiem Mass at Songhor Catholic Church. Thereafter, the body will be taken to his home in Songhor for an overnight stay.

On Friday July 26th, the cortege leaves Songhor for Uholo. A Requeim Mass will be held at St Michael’s Church, Sigomere at 2:00pm, Burial will be at his home in East Uholo Location, Ugunja Constituency on 27th July 2019.

To defray medical and funeral expenses, there will be a harambee on Tuesday July 23rd at All Saints Cathedral, Nairobi at 5:30pm. Friends and well-wishers are invited to attend.
