The Mbiti family announce the passing on of Rev. Prof. John Samuel Mbiti on Saturday, 5th October 2019 in Burgdorf, Switzerland. Rev. Prof. John Samuel Mbiti was born in Mulango, Kitui County Kenya.

Son of Mutuvi Ngaangi and Velesi Mbandi. The elder brother of Meliki Mbithe, the late Willy Mutuvi, Mailu Mutuvi, Lenah John and Margret Mwangangi. He is survived by his wife Verena and children: Kyeni, Maria, Esther and Anna-Kavata and five grandchildren.

Rev. Prof. John Samuel Mbiti was Emeritus Professor of the Makere University of Kampala, Uganda and of the University of Bern, Switzerland. He was a retired Parish Minister in Burgdorf, in Switzerland.

We thank God for his immense contribution to scholarship in African religion and philosophy and in the development of Kiikamba language and literature. The translation of the Greek New Testament, into Kikamba was his latest work. In 2016, the Anglican Church of Southern Africa honoured Prof. John S. Mbiti with the Archbishop’s Award for Peace and Justice during a celebration of his life and writing at the University of Stellenbosch, Republic of South Africa.

We’ll celebrate his life through a memorial service on 01/11/2019 at All Saints Cathedral at 10.00am (please be seated by 9.45am).

Burial service will be on Saturday November 2nd, 2019 at his Mulango home in Kitui County from 10.00am.
