I didn’t know her when she lived. But when I listened to all the tributes from fellow church members, her colleagues, friends and family, I couldn’t hold back tears for Sly. I feel like I knew her. May she rest in eternal peace.

I got to know Sylvia better when she acted as the Kenya Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) coordinator for a month in 2017. When I joined CHAMPS, she was the first person to introduce me to the project. She would always call if I need anything, and ready to advise or point me to the source of advice and/or guidance I may need. Though she was not a CHAMPS employee, Sylvia was always available to help with any CHAMPS work (she did organize our CHAMPS DeCoDe Panel meetings in Nairobi up and till the time she passed on). Sylvia was so easy going, hospitable, social and hardworking. I earned ‘mwalimu’ name because of frequent consultations she made on epidemiology and biostatics work for her masters at John Hopkins – she was always ready to learn new concepts. I was always challenged by her desire to do good, help the less fortunate in the society and be available for her friends – always at the forefront helping organize an event, travel etc (even when it is not her duty to do so) while at the same time being available for her family. We will miss you dearly Sly, RIP dear friend!

I feel lucky to have worked with Sylvia and to have had her as a friend. All the other stories and comments make clear what a great woman she was– she was someone whom you could count on, who went above and beyond, she also did more than required — there was so much life in her. But as well, she was always the person who was reaching out — to the children’s home, the girls who had escaped FGM in northern Kenya, to family members, to support people at work. I will treasure the small tokens I have from her, as she was the type of person who thought of you and wanted you to know it. Of course you want more people like Sylvia in the world — at this point I wish we still just had more time with this Sylvia in the world. But may she inspire us to be better people, to think about others, to give “it” our all, to tell others we care about them. I miss you Sylvia, and I am glad you’re watching out for us now.

My dearest I googled you today and came across this post. Gosh it’s been a month and am soo lost so many questions. Remember when we will fight about how much you spent at work how much people took advantage of you and I would say, take care of you if anything happens to you a replacement will be found before we bury you. I take that back, you are indeed an enigma you are irreplaceable.

We met a short while ago and was only able to spend class time, dinners, and brief conversations together – yet, we became friends. She is a gentle and kind soul. …a genuine and sweet spirit. …a warm heart. …a beautiful smile. …a friendly laugh. …a mind for service. …a voice of comfort. This is the legacy she leaves with me.

I have just stumbled onto the sad news of Sylvia’s passing-on online. I came to Know Sylvia by way of my work at CDC-Kenya. For the short time that I came to know Sylvia, I found her to be a friendly, caring, reliable, and self-less person who was always ready to go overboard to help other people. My spirit is troubled and saddened by the news of your passing on. You departed too soon. May your soul rest in eternal peace.
