Karanja Kabage. the prominent city lawyer, insurance business mogul and politician, has died. He was 70.

He is thought to have suffered a massive heart attack while driving to his Karen home, on Friday night (5th July, 2019) Nairobi County.

The National Police Service, in a statement, said his vehicle veered off the road, along the Southern Bypass, slowed down, appeared to be making a U-turn, then slightly hit a pavement.

The statement says a taxi driver and a Good Samaritan stopped and Kabage, who was still conscious, asked to be taken to the Nairobi Hospital. He arrived at the hospital unconscious.

Efforts to save his life failed and a team of doctors pronounced him dead.

He had spent virtually the whole day at the first annual Mount Kenya High Level Uongozi Forum at Safari Park. He was one of the panelists.

He was also one of the many high profile public figures who attended the late Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore’s memorial service at All Saints Cathedral on Thursday 4th July 2019.

Meanwhile, President Uhuru Kenyatta has out a message of condolence to the family.

Kenyatta described Kabage as a resourceful businessman always willing and ready to offer legal aid to those who sought his help.

“It is painful to lose a great friend at a time like this. I pray that God will give the family, friends and relatives comfort and fortitude at this trying moment,” said President Kenyatta.

Kenyatta said Kabage’s invaluable contribution to the growth of the insurance industry will remain an inspiration to many in the sector and that he will continue to be remembered for generations to come for his great work.

Kabage was a board member of the Kenya Private Sector Alliance, National Social Security Fund (NSSF), Labour Advisory Board, Energy Regulatory Authority Commission among a long list of board memberships.

Kabage also served as a director at African Reinsurance Corporation and First Reinsurance Brokers Limited.

In 2017, he vied for the Nakuru senatorial seat and after failing to get a Jubilee Party ticket, he vied for Njoro constituency seat but lost to Charity Kathambi.

His firm owned the iconic Kenya Bus Service company. He studied lawyer after years as an insurance executive and was a frequent feature at Kilimani Law Courts.
