Maritina Apiyo Makanda

(1945 – 2019)

It is with acceptance of God’s will that we the family of Mama Maritina Apiyo Makanda announce her passing into glory on 19th May 2019 after a long illness.

Wife of the late Andrew Makanda Otieka and daughter of the late Mohammed and the late Mwanatena Okanga. She was sister of Namukuru, the late Chibwire, Atikinyi, Vincent Okanga, the late Felista, the late Oteng’o, Nyarotso and the late Halima. Mother of Councillor Beda Otieka, Consolata Makanda (Mungore Primary), Ritah Makanda, the late Otto Makanda, Dr. Nelson Makanda (Dep Sec Gen NCCK), Dismus Makanda (Nation Media Group), S. Okalle Makanda (MNO Advocates LLP), David Makanda and Phanis Makanda. Mother-in-law of Everlyne, Peris, Harrison, Kanute, Caroline, Peninah, Terry, Racheal and Maximilla. Grandmother of Michel Otieka (Cooperative Bank), Linda, Amy (Canada), Samantha, Noel, Kelvin (Kakamega County), Bethseba (Doha, Qatar), Valentine, Norine, Ursula, Lavena, Josephine, Andrew, Petronillah, Sarah, Elizabeth, Christopher, Ruth, Tracy, Andrew, Eleon, Zanetta, Faith, Annapeace, Trisha, Malayka, Shianwa, Tail and Elvis. She has six great grandchildren.

Family and friends will meet on Sunday 26th May, 2019 at 3.00pm at Nairobi Baptist Church followed by a fundraiser to offset medical and funeral expenses on Tuesday 28th May 2019 at 5.30pm at the same place, concurrent meetings happening at her home in Koyonzo.

The Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday 29th May 2019 at Nairobi Baptist Church from 2.00pm.

The cortege leaves the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital Funeral Home Eldoret on 30th May 2019 for her home where it shall lay in state. Burial shall be held on her ranch in Bumutiru Village, Koyonzo, Kakamega County on 1st June 2019.
