Mrs. Mary Atieno Obel

It is with humble acceptance of God’s will that we announce the passing of Mrs. Mary Atieno Obel (Nyar Asumbi) which occurred on 16th February 2026.

Mary was the beloved wife of Eliud Obel Awino of Kokoth Kateng’ Village, West Karachuonyo, Homa Bay County.

She was the daughter of the late Joseph Opoki Obonyo Nyanjwa, late Mama Catherine Ombok and Mama Margaret Omol of Gem Radung’, Kandira Village in Homa Bay County. Daughter-in-law of the late Senior Chief Benjamin Awino, late mama Dina Odero, Damaris Awuor and Julia Awino.

She was the mother of Benjamin Silinga, Cathie Nana, Natalie Leila and Nelson Mandela.

She was a daughter-in-law of the late Naftali Obage, late Pastor Elisha Arunga, late Cllr. Shem Kisero, late Tom Okoth, late Dick Opiyo, Micah Mitoko, late Dickson Sine and late Robert Omollo. Sister-in-law of late Fredrick Awino, Prof. James Awino (CUE), Charles Omolo, Ezra Awino (Advocate Migori), Elder Joshua Kawino (ODM office), Hellen Obage, Jane Dola, Josephine Mireri, Lencer Bunde, John Awino, Ezra Mitoko (Tourism Fund), Zadrack Awino, Shem Sao, Deborah Awino, Francis Obop (Kakuzi) Naftali Aira, CPA Madan Justice, Dan Obage, late Obilo Obage, Jaindi Kisero, Dr. Bob Arunga, Sam Ogweno, Janam Okoch, Duncan Thomas, Walter Opiyo Dick and Nagai Okoth. Sister- in-law of Mary Awino, Hon, Ruth Awino, Judith Ohito among others.

Her nephews and nieces include David, Elisha Onyango, Nereah, late Frank, Dinah Kawino, Lenin, Jakin, Junior; Timon, Brian Atoo and Eng. Obilo .

Mother-in-law of James Koilekon and Daniel Furnad. Grandmother of Eliud, Princess, Robert, Edward, Joseph, Marybell and Adriel.

Sister of late Nicholas Onyony, late Consolata Onyony, late Roseline Onyony, Agustine Onyony, late Ayo Onyony and late Rawiri Onyony. Mother-in-law of Joan Wangui. Aunty of Advocate Cyprian Onyony, Dr. Justine, Denish among others.

The cortege leaves Umash Funeral Home in Nairobi on Sth March 2026 for a night vigil at her home. Burial takes place at Kowuor village, Kokoth Kateng, West Karachuonyo, Homa Bay County on Friday 6th March 2026.
