Former 400m hurdles world champion Nicholas Bett is dead, his family and Nandi police commander Patrick Wambani have confirmed.

The 26-year-old died in a road crash on Wednesday, a day after returning from the continental championships in Nigeria.

The car the athlete had been driving hit bumps and rolled into a ditch at Sochoi area on Eldoret-Kapsabet road.

Wambani said Bett was alone at the time. His body was taken to a morgue in Eldoret.

Bett made history in China by becoming the first Kenyan to win a gold medal in a short distance race at world stage.

He won the 400m hurdles finals at the 15th IAAF World Championships in Beijing in 47.79 world leading time, beating Russia’s Dennis Kudryavsten in 2015.
