Oliver Mulanda, a former Nation Media Group reporter who abandoned the newsroom for life in academia, collapsed and died on Wednesday March 4, 2020. He was 39.

The Kabarak University school of journalism lecturer collapsed during a meeting at the university, 15 kilometres from Nakuru Town.

His colleagues rushed him to Mediheal Hospital, Nakuru, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Mulanda was a lecturer at Kabarak University’s journalism department.

“We rushed him to the hospital but he died on the way. We don’t know much, but a postmortem examination will reveal what happened,” Dorcas Kebenei, his colleague said.

Mulanda worked at NMG for over five years, before landing a teaching job at Mount Kenya University as a lecturer in 2014 and later Kabarak in 2019.

Mulanda’s death comes a few days after a journalist working for the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation also passed away.

Gladys Kaburu, who worked as a correspondent for Mwago FM, a KBC-owned vernacular station, died on Tuesday, March 3 while receiving treatment.

She had been admitted at St Ann Mission Hospital in Igoji, Meru County, on Monday, March 2.

Family and friends have eulogised Kathomi as a journalist who was passionate and was always dedicated to her work.

Mwago FM station head Kimathi Bauni eulogised the journalist as someone who was determined to create better content.

“Ms Kaburu joined KBC back in 2016 and she has been of great value to the station with her innovative ideas on how to improve the programming and the content,” Bauni stated.
