Peter Kamalingin B. L.

it is with deep sorrow and loving acceptance that we announce the passing on of Peter Bhatia Labu Kamalingin, who until his death was the UNAIDS Country Director, South Sudan. Prior to joining UNAIDS in July 2024, Peter, who all his life strived to transform people’s lives and make the world a better place, worked with ActionAid International and Oxfam as the Director, Global Political & Program Strategy and as the Pan Africa Director respectively.

He was son of the late Stanley Salimo Kamalingin (Retired Judge) and Margaret Kamalingin.

Peter is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Chebet, son Daniel Salimo of Griffith University, Australia, daughter Sarah Cheruto and son Isaac Rotich both of Braeside School, Nairobi and daughter Rachael Cheruto. He was a foster father of Joan of JKUAT School of Law.

He was brother of Scovia Cherop(Kaproron), Charles Kwemoi (UN Nairobi), Anne Kakenya (Compassion International), Bena Nolari (Kitale), the late Moses Kiprop, Denis Kigai (UHTT-Uganda) and Adlyn Chebai (Lawyer, Nairobi).

He had other brothers and sisters including Kokop Chebet, late Zedekia Bukose, Yapchelimo (late), Yapchebet, Kamutap Kariongo (late), Yovan Chemwajar (late), Erifasi Ayeba, Kamutap Cherotwo, Mrs Julius Mwanawoi, Kamutap Rono, Dorothy Laigiya, Jesca Kotut (late) and Alex Boyo (late), Simon Cheptegei, Joyce Banan, Julius Nandi, Fred Ayeba, Lydia Kapchesiy, Patrick Solirno, Nelson Chemonges, Kashar, Jovia Moi, and Edwin Labu.

He was son-in-law of Nelson and Margaret Chelirno. Brother-in-law of Rose Kwemoi, Amos Kipsumbai, Viola Kiprop and Viola Kigai, Hellen & Moses Cherukut, Carol & Robert Mangusho, Emily & Anthony Kuka, Gabriel & Sharon and Andrew Kirui.

Peter was a cousin of the Morintat’s, the Kalamoyo’s, the Ndiema’s, the Muneria’s and the Shadrack Kipkoech’s.

Nephew of Miriam Morintat, the late Christine Sukukuu, Senator Henry Ole Ndiema, Sarah Muneria, Juliet Chemos, Hillary Ndiema and Rogers Ndiema. Peter was the favorite uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are meeting daily at 5,00pm for burial preparations at All Saints Cathedral, Nairobi, and Kaloni Hotels in Setta, Kampala and at his home in Kaproron, Kween District, Eastern Uganda.

There will be two concurrent Memorial Services on Wednesday, June 18, 2025 at 2pm, one at the All Saints Cathedral, Nairobi, the other one at the All Saints Cathedral, Nakasero, Uganda.

A fundraiser will follow the Nairobi memorial at 5pm at the same venue.

Family and friends will gather at the Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi on Thursday morning, April 19. Thereafter, the funeral procession will leave for his home in Kapchorwa for a vigil and thereafter to his Kaproron home farm, Kween District, Eastern Uganda where he will be laid to rest on Saturday, June 21, 2025.

Peter you have left us too soon, but you fulfilled your promise — you touched and had an impact on so many people. Your legacy will live forever.
