We regret to announce the sudden death of Dr. Mary Mutai of Egerton University (Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Management) which occurred while undergoing treatment in India.
Daughter of the late Mr. Kipkendes Arap Maina and Mrs. Sarah Maina (Kabarak Farm, Nakuru County). Beloved wife of Prof. Benjamin K. Mutai (Egerton University). Mother of Kathryn Chepng’eno and Aimee Chebet (both of Moi Kabarak Primary School). Sister of the late Pauline Cherono, late Mrs Grace Ruto, Mr. Christopher Bor, Mr. Charles Rop and John Tabutok. Sister in-law of Mrs..Esther Rop, Mrs. Mary Bor and Mrs. Jacqueline Tabutuk of Ogilgei Farm, Njoro. Daughter-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. John Sigira of Benditai Farm, Londiani. Aunt of Lucy, Kennedy, Hudson, Isaac and many others.
Friends and relatives are meeting daily at their home Upper Hill Estate, near Soilo junction. Opp. Riva Petrol Station from 5.00 p.m-6.30 pm. for burial arrangement and Prayers.
Contribution towards medical and burial expenses may be sent through Pay Bill No 522522, Account No 120833 1493 Account name Benjamin Kipkurui Mutai. The body arrived on Saturday, 13th May 2017 from India and was preserved at Egerton University Funeral home.
The cortege leaves Egerton Funeral Home on Wednesday, 17th May 2017 at 9.00 am, for funeral service at Deneside Gardens located between Njoro and Egerton University. Burial will take place at Sumat Estate, Njoro on the same day.

Dr. Mary Chepkoech Maina-Mutai academically taught me Agricultural Production Economics but her life advice taught me so much more. She was proving that the inspirational aspect of teaching is more important than knowledge. The inspiratiinal part of teaching has been left to self made inspirational speakers who may not have had the formal classes in child psychology or education.
In 2013, Canadian educator Lori Gard wrote a popular piece for Huffpost Living which highlighted caring as the most important thing a teacher can do to his or her students. ” At the end of the day, most students won’t remember how organized your bulletin boards are. How straight and neat are the desk rows. But they will remember you. Your kindness. Your empathy. Your care and concern. They will remember that you took the time to listen. That you stopped to ask them how they were. How they really were.”
Dr. Maina impacted my life so much so that I had to trace her home during burial to ensure I carried her casket and participated in the actual burial. Her death ate into me like a corrosive acid. It was the sense that I had lost a destiny linker. A useful foil in the construction of my cademic life that relied heavily on character development rather than rocking grades.
As I took the spade during the burial to cast the soil, anyone would think I was an ordinary funeral attendant. But it was the impact of Dr. Maina in my heart that drove me. Paying last respect by participating in the burial of such a mighty teacher in my life served an honest job of appreciating her posthumously. She was much more than credentials, experience and intelligence. I will forever remember her.
